About the Department

The Department of Hair and Beauty Applications is a practice-oriented undergraduate program that aims to transform the field of beauty and personal care, which historically developed through craft-based knowledge transmission, into an academic discipline grounded in scientific knowledge, aesthetic sensitivity, and ethical responsibility.

Our Aim

The aim of the Department of Hair and Beauty Applications is to educate professionals, business managers, entrepreneurs, and educators who are equipped with scientific and applied knowledge in hairdressing, skin and body care, hand and foot care, epilation, and makeup applications, who have internalized the principles of hygiene and occupational health and safety, who possess refined aesthetic sensitivity and an artistic perspective, who hold technical competence at a level capable of competing nationally and internationally, and who are research-oriented, open to innovation, and committed to professional ethics.

The department brings hairdressing, skin and body care, hand and foot care, epilation, makeup artistry, and salon and business management together under a single academic roof. This structure ensures the education of professionals who not only perform applications but also analyze their field conceptually, evaluate it with scientific criteria, and develop it further. Through this approach, which combines professional mastery with an academic perspective, graduates are expected to become both skilled practitioners and contributors to their field.

Scientific and Disciplinary Foundation

The field of beauty and personal care historically developed through craft-based knowledge transmission. Today, having moved beyond the stages of professionalization and academization, the field is in the process of institutionalizing as an independent area of science and practice. The department is one of the pioneering institutional steps of this disciplinarization process in Türkiye, and in this context it aims to strengthen the scientific identity and academic legitimacy of the field.

The educational content of the program rests not on a single specialization but on the intersection of complementary scientific fields. Anatomy and physiology, dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and microbiology and sterilization form the foundation related to human health and safety. Design principles, color, and aesthetic theory establish the visual and artistic dimension. Business management, customer relations, and entrepreneurship complete the economic and institutional aspect of the profession. This integrated structure enables students to learn practice not as a collection of scattered techniques but within a coherent conceptual framework.

Sectoral Need and Academic Response

In Türkiye, the beauty and personal care sector has grown rapidly in recent years in terms of both scale and institutionalization. Rising consumer expectations, the clarification of service standards, and the sector's opening to international markets require the profession to be practiced not only with manual skill but also with scientific knowledge and evidence-based application. Providing an academic response to this need, the department aims to raise the standard, reliability, and social prestige of the profession.

The curriculum takes the Turkish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TYYÇ) as its reference, and course information packages are designed in alignment with the Bologna Process. In this way, the competencies acquired by graduates become defined and comparable at both national and international levels. The program also seeks to educate students not only as practitioners but as prospective researchers who observe, question, and advance their field.

The principles of hygiene, occupational health and safety, public health awareness, professional ethics, and sustainability are embedded throughout the entire curriculum. Through talks and applied workshops conducted with leading practitioners of the sector, students become acquainted with the current practice of the field at an early stage. In this way, alongside technical skill, they acquire the habit of scientific thinking, a strong professional identity, and a sense of ethical responsibility.
